    1. In the past, some specific patterns of Batik could only be worn by nobility. What role does Batik play in culture today? In Solo, there is a Batik Carnival. Is Batik incorporated into everyday life or is it only emphasized during special occasions such as this carnival?

    2. The Bali Art Festival is a major event that happens one a year. There is much dancing, art, food, and music. What dances would be performed? What food would be guaranteed to be found at this festival? What are usual festival items to be found at such an event. (ex. U.S.- mardi grass. guaranteed to find mardi grass beads.)

  3. Food!

    1) In Japanese food such as the bento box lunch, there is usually some combination of grilled, steamed, boiled, pickled, fried foods. In Indonesian culture, are there some of these food preparation rules? What are they?

    2) In traditional Hawaiian culture, taro was a staple food. The story of Kalo was that it is man's older brother, so we must treat it respectfully as an older sibling who nourishes us. In Indonesian culture, is there this kind of close human-food connection? Are there any stories like this of man and food?

    1. My parents met in Indonesia while backpacking, and I have grown up hearing about their experiences. When my parents met, there were many backpackers in Indonesia. What is the most common way for people to explore Indonesia? Are backpackers still prevalent?

    2. Here in Hawaii, tourism is an extremely important part of our economy. How much does Indonesia rely on tourism? Which components of tourism (hotels, tours, etc.) have the biggest effects on Indonesia?

    1. In Hawaii, many people classify our native cuisine as being a combination of cuisines around the world. What is the signature characteristic of Indonesian food? What are some specific examples?

    2. I have read that in Indonesia, many traditional ceremonies include feast and food. What are some famous/important ceremonial dishes? What events do these dishes correspond with?

    1. I have read that in Indonesia, there is a celebration called the Solo International Ethnic Music Festival, where both local and international musicians perform. What is the importance of music in Indonesian culture? Why is it important to celebrate both local and international music? What does a traditional Indonesian song sound like?

    2. In Indonesia there is an annual festival called the Krakatoa Festival, where people celebrate the volcanic island, Krakatoa. What is the significance of this island? How do the various performances that are performed at this festival reflect the importance of the island?

    1. What parts of Indonesia bring in the most tourism? Indonesia, like Hawaii, is comprised of multiple islands and in Hawaii, certain islands bring in more tourism than others. Is that the case in Indonesia, and why?

    2. Is there a certain group of people who you find visit Indonesia the most? In Hawaii, we really value Japanese visitors/tourists. Is there anything similar in Indonesia?

    Is the relationship between a woman and a man in public still strict? Is it still looked down upon if they are alone together? How do people choose who they want to marry if they don't get a chance to get to know others?

    The families of females are very protective and become very angry if she goes out with a guy. Does the guy's family become angry at him if he goes out with a girl?
